Berkeley Summer Programs

Students from all around the world are brought to the UC Berkeley campus every summer through the Berkeley Summer Sessions program, which works in partnership with universities, institutions, and schools. The Berkeley summer programs offer students the opportunity to choose from more than 700 classes across 80 different academic fields. Summer Virtual Track

High school students from all over the world, including those from the United States, have the opportunity to participate in the Berkeley Pre-College Scholars: Summer Virtual track. Through this program, students can join an online community of scholars and work toward achieving their academic goals at a public university ranked first in the world. Participants in the Pre-College Scholars program will be given the opportunity to earn college credit alongside other kids from Berkeley and from across the world.

You will have the ability to communicate with students, employees, and faculty at UC Berkeley, all without having to leave the comfort of your own home. You won’t have to wait long before you can experience all that makes Berkeley such a wonderful place to live.

In addition to the academics, we offer a variety of optional extracurricular activities and events, both in-person and online, that will provide you with the opportunity to broaden your personal and social horizons, learn information that is directly applicable to your life, and have fun at Berkeley outside of the classroom.

Summer Residential Track

High school students from across the world and from the United States have the option to spend their summer at Berkeley as part of the Berkeley Pre-College Scholars program, which includes a residential component called Summer Residential. Participants in Pre-College Scholars will have the opportunity to earn college credit while simultaneously experiencing university life to the fullest with other students from around the United States and around the world.

Participants will come from all 50 states and more than 100 countries. Students will have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, field trips, and an exploratory workshop series that will be led by trained admissions professionals during the summer months when they attend Berkeley Summer Sessions. In addition, they will be required to take two classes during this time.

Your residential experience throughout the summer begins with a series of introductory meetings, an interactive tour of the campus, and opportunities to connect with program staff and participants from other programs. The undergraduate Resident Assistants and Mentors (RAMs) at UC Berkeley as well as the program staff will organize activities and trips to assist you to meet other students in your program, help you make the most of your time at Berkeley, and prepare you for your future experience in college.

Summer Commuter Track

Through participation in the Berkeley Pre-College Scholars: Summer Commuter track, you will become part of a community that includes more than 250 high school students who spend their summers in Berkeley having fun.

Participate in classes, extracurricular activities, and college discovery seminars that are offered on the Berkeley campus and that are designed specifically for you. While you are here, make the most of everything the campus has to offer, including the opportunity to earn college credit.

Find classes that will both satisfy and test your insatiable need for knowledge. You can find the next set of classes beyond what your high school offers, explore a possible college major, or seek to try courses in an area of specific interest during the summer at Berkeley.

Summer Non-Credit Track

Berkeley Summer Computer Science Academy

Students between the ages of 16 and 17 who are motivated, interested in coding and computer science, and wish to gain an excellent understanding of college-level student life are encouraged to apply for the Berkeley Summer Computer Science Academy, which is a rigorous 2-week experience designed specifically for them. It is intended for students who have had little to no experience with coding in the past.

The students will be immersed in coding, sophisticated computer science ideas, collaborative programming, and problem-solving during their time in this class. The Beauty and Joy of Computing (BJC) curriculum, which is the introductory computer science course that Berkeley undergraduates take, serves as the foundation for the Academy. This curriculum was developed by Berkeley Computer Science Teaching Professor Dan Garcia, and day-to-day instruction is provided by Berkeley BJC veteran teachers.

Participants in the academy will take part in a strenuous and rewarding series of one-of-a-kind coding challenges each day. These challenges will range from providing an introduction to computing and coding languages to encouraging participants to pursue a programming project that is of their own design and is of interest to them.

Berkeley Changemaker

Students from high schools all across the world, including those in the United States, are given the opportunity to spend their summers at Berkeley by participating in the Berkeley Changemaker program. Since the university’s founding, the University of California, Berkeley has attracted visionaries and contributors to the society whose work helps make the world a better and more fair place. These individuals are known as changemakers.

The Pre-College Scholars Berkeley Changemaker track draws from the things that make Cal special and builds on those things. These things include a singular history of leading in an inclusive manner and an agency for making society better.

The coursework that we provide inspires our students to pursue their interests and guides them toward a clearer understanding of who they want to become and how to make that dream a reality. There is a space in this learning community for you to participate, no matter what it is that piques your interest.

You will improve your skills in three essential domains — critical thinking, communication, and collaboration — if you take advantage of the Berkeley Changemaker track. These domains include critical thinking, communication, and collaboration. In addition, you will explore what changemaking looks like in a wide variety of academic fields all over campus.

You will also become a member of the Berkeley Changemaker program, which is being implemented across the entire campus and has already recruited more than 11.5% of undergraduates in the past 18 months.
