What exactly is Pennsylvania’s Cheyney University known for? In 1837, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania became the first historically black university in the United States. It is a public, coeducational university in Pennsylvania. The university is affiliated with the state system of higher education in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
In the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, Cheyney is home to the 275-acre (1.11 km2) campus of Cheyney University. Cheyney is a community in Thornbury Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania, and Thornbury Township, Delaware County (the school straddles both counties). The town is located in both of these townships.

The Middle States Commission gave Cheyney University probationary status in higher education in November 2015. History of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania
The history of the Cheyney University of Pennsylvania started when it was established on February 25, 1837, making it the first Historically Black College and University in the United States (HBCU). The university was founded due to a legacy made by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker businessman, and philanthropist. In his will, Humphreys left $10,000, equivalent to one-tenth of his estate, to create a school that would educate people of African descent and trains them for careers in education.
The institution, formerly the African Institute, eventually became known as the Institute for Colored Youth. During its formative years, it concentrated its instruction on agricultural and commercial pursuits because those were the primary vocations demanded by the market at the time.
The Institute was moved to George Cheyney’s farm in 1902, which was a 275-acre property located approximately 25 miles west of Philadelphia. The year 1913 marked the first time that the name “Cheyney” was used in connection with the institution, even though the school’s official name was altered several times throughout the 20th century.
Cheyney State College evolved into Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1983 after becoming a charter member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). It is the oldest of fourteen-member institutions and the only historically black college or university (HBCU) in the state.
Although Cheyney University has a rich history as the first institution of higher learning for African Americans, our campus today welcomes students of various races, cultures, and nationalities. All these students receive educational instruction far beyond what Richard Humphreys had in mind when he founded the university.
