Choate Boarding School

Choate was initially a school reserved exclusively for male students. In the year 1896, Judge William Gardiner Choate established and endowed this organization. Rosemary Hall, a girls’ preparatory school, had its beginnings in 1890 in Wallingford, Connecticut, four years earlier.

In the year 1900, the school was relocated to Greenwich, Connecticut; however, it was relocated back to Wallingford in the year 1971. In 1974, Choate and Rosemary Hall came together to form a single institution that served both men and women.

Learning can take place at Choate Boarding School around the clock, seven days a week, on any of our 458 acres, in any of our state-of-the-art facilities, thanks to the commitment to providing exceptionally transforming experiences. They provide pupils with a route to the discovery that is specifically customized to their abilities and areas of interest.

What is coeducation?

What exactly is meant by the term coeducation? Coeducation is a system in which both male and female students attend the same educational institution, such as a school, college, or university.

Although it is a relatively new phenomenon, coeducation was accepted earlier and to a greater extent in the United States than it was in Europe, which presented a greater challenge due to its higher reliance on tradition.

After the Reformation, several Protestant groups advocated that girls as well as boys should be educated to read the Bible. This was the impetus that led to the first coeducational schools being established in western Europe. Because young children of both sexes were required to attend dame schools in colonial New England, Scotland, and the northern areas of England, this practice became especially prominent in those regions.

By the end of the 19th century, 70 percent of institutions in the United States allowed both men and women to attend. Many educational establishments that had previously been segregated based on sexual orientation opened their doors to students of both sexes throughout the second half of the 20th century.

Is Choate a prestigious school?

Is Choate Boarding School a prominent educational institution? Wallingford, Connecticut is the location of the prestigious Choate Rosemary Hall private boarding school. It has a student-teacher ratio of 7 to 1, with 868 students enrolled in grades 9 through 12, and there are a total of 7 teachers.

The highest grade that is provided has a tuition rate of $65,820. Following their time here, each and every one of these students enroll in a post-secondary institution of higher learning.

All of the academic facilities, including the Paul Mellon Humanities Center, which is home to more traditional inquiry-based discussions, the Kohler Environmental Center, which supports a one-of-a-kind Environmental Immersion Program, and the Edward Lanphier Center for Mathematics and Computer Science, are designed and purpose-built to be program-driven, student-centric spaces dedicated to teaching and learning.

Paul Mellon Arts Center

The award-winning architect I. M. Pei was responsible for the design of the Paul Mellon Arts Center, also known as PMAC, which was erected in 1972.

Pei is perhaps best known for the East Wing of the National Gallery, for which the Arts Center served as a prototype, as well as the pyramid-shaped entry to the Louvre Museum in Paris. The generous patron Paul Mellon gave the building to the institution in 1925.

Kohler Environmental Center

At 211 East Main Street, the Kohler Environmental Center (KEC) is a state-of-the-art teaching, research, and residential environmental center.

Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the LEED Platinum-Certified building houses the Environmental Immersion Program (EIP), a year-long residential academic program, and Choate’s Sustainable Food Project.

Lanphier Center

In March 2015, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects were responsible for the design of the Cameron and Edward Lanphier Center for Mathematics and Computer Science, which is a building that has been awarded the LEED Gold certification.

This cutting-edge structure serves as the location for all of the school’s mathematics courses. The facility encourages collaboration and creativity by providing students with locations in which they can work together on group projects.

It was designed to enhance hands-on learning. In addition to that, this structure houses Choate’s first purpose-built i.d.Lab©, which acts as a driving force behind our educational programming. Choate’s Robotics Team, which has won numerous awards, calls the Lanphier Center its home.

How selective is Choate?

How tough is the selection process at Choate? Choate Boarding School has an admittance rate of 11%, making it one of the most competitive schools in the state of Connecticut. The acceptance percentage for students into Connecticut’s private schools are, on average, 68% per year (2022-23).

An admissions interview is required to be performed within the current application cycle and is highly recommended to prospective students. They are only able to schedule one admission interview with each prospective student.

Students who plan to apply to Choate for the following fall are required to participate in an interview between the months of September and February.

Every admissions interview is conducted by video chat. The online method provides a more fair experience for our candidates and makes it possible for families to be completely present during those valuable experiences when they visit our campus or connect with us during admission events. They do not provide in-person interviews in any capacity, including on campus or elsewhere.

No matter who conducts the interview, each one will be given the same amount of weight in the overall evaluation of your application to Choate.

The time allotted for the interview appointment is forty-five minutes. The first twenty-five to twenty-seven minutes of the visit will be spent with the interviewer having a one-on-one conversation with the potential student.

What president went to Choate?

Who among the US presidents attended Choate? The late John F. Kennedy went to Choate (this is before the merging).

In point of fact, he delivered a speech on the occasion of Choate Boarding School’s 50th-anniversary banquet on September 28th, 1946. An excerpt has been taken from the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum can be found here::

“I think the success of any school can be measured by the contribution that the Alumni make to our national life. And by this standard, I think Choate has succeeded very well, for the Alumni of Choate have made a great contribution to this Country in war and peace. But there is one field in which Choate and the other private schools of the Country have not made a contribution, and that is the field of politics. It’s perhaps natural that this should be so. In America, politics are regarded with great contempt; and politicians themselves are looked down upon because of their free and easy compromises.”

It is interesting to note that the university has a program that is named after the former president that focuses on government and public service. Students who have an interest in philosophy, politics, and economics are the target audience for the John F. Kennedy ’35 Program in Government and Public Service, which is an immersion program.

This is a five-term program that helps participants develop their skills through a combination of classroom instruction, hands-on experience, and oral presentations.

Reading during the summer helps students get ready by laying the groundwork for an understanding of John F. Kennedy, his legacy, and the policies he advocated. Before taking additional electives in areas such as law, public policy, and social psychology, each student of Choate Boarding School is required to complete foundational coursework in economics and political science.

In addition to the regular coursework, students participate in writing-intensive small group tutorials that allow them to discuss large philosophical, political, and economic subjects with a faculty advisor.

Internships that take place apart from the school provide students the opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice. Recent students have had the opportunity to intern with members of Congress, mayors, state senators, and county judges, as well as in political campaigns, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and legal aid programs.

Is Choate a feeder school?

Is Choate boarding school considered a feeder school? High schools that serve as feeders for higher education institutions are known as feeder schools. These schools often send the majority of their graduates to the most renowned colleges and universities, such as those in the Ivy League.

There is a widespread belief among parents that they must enroll their children in prestigious private schools in order to ensure that such schools will admit their offspring to the Ivy League.

Let’s have Yale as an example. Yale, like the other colleges in the Ivy League, is comparable to a small number of other universities. They see a significant number of students who attended one of the country’s very few private “feeder schools.” Most of these students come from the Northeast. Included on the list of residential schools are Andover, Exeter, and Deerfield. Groton, Fieldston, and Sidwell Friends are examples of day schools in the area.

Choate Rosemary Hall in Connecticut, for example, is considered a feeder institution because it has supplied 46 students to Yale University in only the last five years.

The school holds a College Fair in the fall, which takes place in October, and a College Fair in the spring, which takes place in April. These fairs are invitation-only until further notice due to the stringent health and safety regulations that must be followed. This year, in addition to the fairs that we will be participating in, we will also be hosting in-person visits.

What is the community like at Choate?

How would one describe the community at Choate? The commitment of the school to the individual, intellectual, social, and spiritual development of its members—including students, instructors, friends, and neighbors—creates a bond among them all.

Change, development, and growth are all things that may be expected to take place throughout one’s time at Choate, possibly to a greater extent than one ever could have done before attending the school. The purpose of the school is to ensure that your time here is enjoyable, challenging, rewarding, and meaningful. And by doing so, one can learn more about themselves in the process.

Individual points of view contribute to the growth of the Choate Boarding School, but the experiences are held together by shared aspirations and the will to improve upon existing conditions. Where do most Choate students go to college?

Where do the majority of Choate’s graduates continue their education? A significant number of Choate alumni are accepted to prestigious universities such as Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, amongst others.

They have a method that is extremely individualized and time-intensive, but the reward is in the results: pleased students who have found the college that is the best “match” for them.

The term “fit” does not refer to making concessions; educational institutions with varying levels of admissions competitiveness share features that appeal to candidates. Choate Boarding School counselors tailor the college application process to meet the needs of individual counselees by putting an emphasis on personal “fit” rather than generic college ranking lists.
