Dartmouth’s Graduation Requirements

What are the graduation requirements for Dartmouth?

What are the prerequisites that need to be met to graduate from Dartmouth? As part of Dartmouth’s graduation requirements, all students must complete 35 credits.

The 35 credits can be made up of Dartmouth credits and up to four credits from an exchange period. The Registrar’s Office is responsible for deciding whether or not transfer credits can be applied. Dartmouth students typically take three classes per term for 12 terms.

Moreover, it is also necessary to fulfill the following:

  • Distributive and World Culture Requirements
  • Language Requirement
  • Physical Education Requirement

Before graduating, students are required to have finished three terms of physical education and have completed a swim test that covers 50 yards.

Students who compete in sports have the opportunity to earn academic credit for their participation in those activities during the term in which they compete. You are only allowed to earn a maximum of two credits in this manner.

Improving one’s skills and actively taking part in class are two of the requirements for completing a course in physical education.

Please be aware that the procedure of registering for physical education classes is distinct from the process of registering for regular courses.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s extenuating circumstances, including disruptions to students’ schedules and ongoing concerns about virus transmission, the College has revised the Physical Education (PE) requirements for students graduating in the academic years 2021-2022, 2022-2023, 2023-2024, and 2024-2025 as follows:

How does Dartmouth’s graduation work?

How is graduation at Dartmouth conducted? After the completion of Dartmouth’s graduation requirements, the names of applicants are sent by the Registrar’s Office to the appropriate academic department so that they can undergo a thorough assessment and get confirmation that all requirements have been satisfied.

After all of your final grades have been entered, the department will evaluate whether or not you have met all of the requirements for your degree, at which point they will forward your degree certificate to the Registrar’s Office so that they can enter your degree on your transcript.

If it is determined that you have not satisfied your criteria after the review, the appropriate academic department will let you know.

After your degree has been conferred and put on your transcript, you can then place an order for your diploma. Please allow between six and eight weeks for the processing and delivery of your order. At Commencement, diplomas are not distributed to students.

Commencement details will be available through the website but this is the order of exercises:

It is suggested that the audience remain seated to ensure that everyone can watch the procession.

The Class of 1879 Trumpeters’ Fund is responsible for making it possible for there to be a brass ensemble present at commencement on an annual basis. At the time of the 50th reunion in 1879, which took place in 1929, the fund was formed.
