Who are eligible for Northwestern Ph.D. admissions?

Who is qualified to apply for a doctoral program at Northwestern? There is an application for you, regardless of whether you are a new student, withdrawn student, alum, or whether you are currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree at Northwestern.

In accordance with civil rights legislation and the university’s commitment, it is Northwestern University’s policy not to discriminate against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, parental status, age, disability, citizenship, or veteran status in matters pertaining to admissions, employment, housing, or services, or in the educational program or activities that it operates. This policy is in place to ensure that the university fulfills its commitment to upholding civil rights.

However, in order to apply for the Ph.D. program at Northwestern, students need to obtain a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited university in the United States, or an equivalent degree from another country.

Applications from international students who have completed a bachelor’s degree program in three years will be considered by TGS as well.

In addition, you can be considered for admission to Northwestern before you finish your undergraduate degree, but you need to have the degree in hand before you can enroll there.

What are the application requirements for the Northwestern Ph.D. program?

In order to be considered for the Ph.D. program at Northwestern, what are the prerequisites? Prior to your Northwestern Ph.D. application,  you will be needed to prepare and do the following:

  • Submit an application online.
  • Pay an online application fee by credit card.
  • Submit your Statement of Purpose.
  • Upload your transcript or academic record.
  • Submit your test scores (if required by your admitting program).
  • Upload two to three Letters of Recommendation

What is the admission process for the Northwestern Ph.D. program?

So, what are the steps involved in getting accepted into the Ph.D. program at Northwestern? During each application cycle, which begins the first week of September, TGS will only accept applications that are submitted online.

However, you are not required to finish the online application in a single session if you choose to. You are free to log in at any time to make changes to the information you provided in your application.

Remember that once you have sent in your application using the online system, you will not be able to make any changes to it.

The application process consists mostly of three stages. To submit your application, you will need to:

  1. Send in your application and be sure to pay the accompanying cost.
  2. View our decision.
  3. Submit your enrollment decision.

When you have finished creating an account with the online application tool, please ensure that you read the application instructions carefully and verify with the department of the program you are applying to for any extra information before submitting your application.

Note the following:

  • Your application won’t be processed until you’ve provided responses to all of the necessary questions and paid the application fee.
  • There are a lot of departments that only take students for the fall quarter.
  • Applicants are only permitted to submit one application to TGS each calendar year. For the sake of illustration, if you submitted an application for the Fall Quarter of 2023, the earliest that you will be able to make another application is for the Fall Quarter of 2024.
  • Applicants are not permitted to submit an application to more than one program in a given year, nor are they permitted to submit an application to the same program more than once within a given year.
  • Applications submitted in triplicate will not be considered, and fees paid for duplicate applications cannot be returned.
  • Your application and any supporting papers that you send in become the property of the University; they will not be returned or forwarded to you under any circumstances.
  • It has been decided that admission decisions will be communicated through the online application in order to speed up the process. You are free to check the status of the decision made on your application whenever you like by logging into the online system whenever you want to see if it has been updated. If there is a decision to be viewed, a link labeled “View Decision” will be presented. In the event that a determination has not been settled upon, there will be no link.
  • TGS also reserves the power to admit or deny admission whenever it believes that it has sufficient evidence to do so. This right can be exercised anytime TGS deems that it has adequate evidence.

How do you get a Ph.D. admission to Northwestern?

Check your program requirements.

Submit your application.

You can submit your application and pay the application cost through the online system (via credit card only). If your program requires items to be mailed to them, please submit those materials directly to your program. Get started with your application online.

View your admissions decision.

Your online application will be updated with a decision regarding your admission shortly. The response times can vary greatly from program to program. Take a look at the pages titled Admission Decision and Enrollment.

Put in a request for help (if applicable).
