Participants

The National Japan Bowl welcomes high school students passionate about the Japanese language and culture. Participants must be enrolled in a Japanese language course at their high school during the competition.

Students should form teams of three with students from the same school and the same level of Japanese language study. These levels are not dependent on the years a student has studied Japanese in high school but rather on the course level. Schools can only enter one team per level into the competition.

Students are divided into three levels based on their level of study and proficiency in the Japanese language: Level II for students enrolled in second-year high school, Level III for third-year level students, and Level IV for fourth- or fifth-year high school-level students enrolled in Japanese language or in AP Japanese.

The competition attracts a diverse group of participants from various backgrounds, reflecting the wide-ranging interest in Japanese language and culture among high school students.

The competition aims to foster language skills and cultural understanding among non-native speakers. Thus, native Japanese speakers or students who have lived in Japan for at least three months are generally not eligible. However, a case-by-case evaluation of eligibility is possible.

Structure of the Competition

The National Japan Bowl competition features preliminary rounds designed to test the knowledge and skills of participating teams before they advance to the finals. These initial rounds consist of a series of quiz-style questions and activities that cover various aspects of the Japanese language and culture, tailored to each team’s level of study.

The preliminary rounds are structured to allow each team to demonstrate their linguistic proficiency and cultural understanding through both written exams and oral quizzes. The written exams assess students’ comprehension of Japanese grammar, vocabulary, and reading, while the oral quizzes focus on listening comprehension, conversation, and broader cultural knowledge.

The preliminary rounds feature diverse topics ranging from traditional Japanese history, arts, and literature to contemporary subjects such as pop culture, technology, and current events. This wide array of questions ensures that participants are tested on a comprehensive range of subjects, reflecting the dynamic and multifaceted nature of the Japanese language and culture.

For the Preliminary Rounds, students will respond to a total of 90 questions (50 in Round 1 and 40 in Round 2). Each round is followed by an Answer Review session in which proctors review the correct responses to the questions.

None of the preliminary rounds are open to the public. Only people who have pre-registered to attend as observers will be permitted entry to see a preliminary round.

At the end of the preliminary rounds, the top three highest-scoring teams from each level advance to the finals, where they compete for the title.

The Championship Round is held on stage in front of a live audience. Unlike earlier competition rounds, this one is accessible to the public and all other participants and spectators.

The students will introduce themselves to the audience and judges through a brief segment called “Team Shokai.” Team Shokai is a public speaking opportunity for students to demonstrate their speaking and writing abilities. Each Japan Bowl team should prepare a brief introduction in which each member has at least 30 seconds to speak.

Then, they will compete in three rounds: the Individual Round, the Team Round, and the Toss-Up Round.

• Individual Round (6 total questions): A random wheel spin selects two students from each team to present a statement utilizing a specific phrase from the study guide aloud. They will have 30 seconds to compose a sentence and answer the question after being given their phrase.
• Team Round (8 total questions): The question will be read aloud to all three teams at the same time, and they will write their answers on a whiteboard. Championship round judges will evaluate the answers live.
• Toss-Up Round (15 total questions): Each student must use a handheld buzzer to buzz in before answering a question during the final round of the Championship Round. Only one student from each team may answer a question on their behalf. Students may buzz in at any time throughout the question, but they are not permitted to communicate with their teammates before answering.

During the Toss-Up Round, students may be asked Bonus Questions. If a team correctly answers a question, they may be given the opportunity to answer an attached bonus question. In this round, students may confer to answer the bonus question within 30 seconds.
