Let’s break it down the application process and requirements!

1. Determine Eligibility

If you’re a high-achieving student about to enter your final year of high school, listen up! You’ll want to jump on this opportunity during your junior year (yes, that’s Grade 11 for most of us). But, heads up, high school seniors are not eligible.

2. Check Your Scores

Although not absolute requirements, recommended scores for a strong application include:

  •  PSAT Math Scores: 740 or higher
  •  PSAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Score: 700 or higher

For U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents:

  • This includes U.S. students studying overseas.
  • Apply directly to the Center for Excellence in Education (CEE).

Note: Schools don’t nominate or select students for RSI; students apply individually.

For International Applicants:

  • Each participating country has its own selection procedure.
  • Contact Ms. Maite Ballestero, Executive Vice President of Programs, to determine if your country participates. If so, her team will guide you to the appropriate representative in your country.

4. Gather Your Application Materials

Essay Responses: Detail your goals in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. Express what draws you to the research areas you’ve selected. For every sub-category, highlight one or two questions or challenges that captivate you most in that realm.

Dive into the reasons these particular queries resonate with you. Remember, your answers will be shared with potential mentors. Be clear and detailed, emphasizing any past research, coursework, or related experiences that equip you to excel immediately in these areas at RSI.

Recommendations: Obtain recommendation letters from two teachers (preferably in Math/Science or from a research supervisor). If you’ve been part of a research project for four weeks or longer at a university or laboratory, get a recommendation from your research supervisor. You can submit up to 4 recommendation letters.

High School Transcript: Request your official high school transcript.

Standardized Test Scores: Collate scores from all your nationwide standardized tests, such as the PSAT, SAT, ACT, and AP exams. It’s beneficial to have taken the PSAT if applying for RSI.
