But that is not all the University of Chicago average GPA tells us about the schools and the students that apply and get in.

It also serves as an important roadmap for students who are interested in one day attending the school. The reason for this is because the 4.48 average GPA tells us two very important facts about the students who are getting in.

First of all, it is telling us that students who are accepted to UChicago are taking a large number of classes that are scored out of a weighted 5.0 GPA. This means that they are taking advanced courses such as honors, AP and IB classes.

Secondly, it tells us that not only are students taking those types of classes, but also excelling in them and earning top grades.

So, if you are a student interested in beating the odds of the University of Chicago acceptance rate, you are going to want to take as many advanced courses as possible during your high school years.

What is the GPA cut off for University of Chicago?

As is the case with the vast majority of schools, there is no official GPA cut off, however students should make a point to get as close – or even above – that average GPA of students who are accepted.

The truth is that even with a 4.0 GPA in high school, there is no guarantee that any student will get into UChicago. Getting great grades is just a part of the equation, and a student that wants to improve their chances of getting into the school will have to do quite a lot more than merely perform well in their high school classes.

University of Chicago SAT Scores

That is what brings us to our next section of this breakdown. For many years, the standardized tests – both the SAT and ACT – were seen as a crucially important factor in a student’s ability to get into a top-tier school.

While it is still seen as a highly important aspect, it’s relevance has taken a dip recently. In fact, a large number of schools in the United States have made the SAT and ACT optional for students who are applying. The reason for that is because the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made it quite difficult for students to actually take the in-person exam.

University of Chicago is amongst those schools, and they offered a message on their test-optional policy on their official site.

“Due to the current situation surrounding COVID-19, we understand that many students will be unable to submit standardized testing for the 2020/2021 application cycle,” the announcement reads. “Don’t worry—this is not an issue with our application process! Our application process is test-optional for all applicants (Domestic, International and Transfer Applicants). You are a hardworking student and these current challenges should not impact your future goals! We look forward to reviewing your application (with or without testing) in the fall and winter!

“Although we are test-optional, we are still happy to accept and consider SAT or ACT scores from students who have previously taken these exams and would like to share their scores as part of their application.

“We will accept December SAT and ACT scores for Early Decision II, and February ACT scores for Regular Decision.”

So, while the school is currently test optional, students should prepare as if they will have to take either the SAT or ACT for a number of reasons. First off, it is quite likely that all schools will return to tests being required.

Moreover, with schools like the University of Chicago – which are incredibly competitive – students want to take every opportunity to prove that they are up to the school’s standards when they apply. A very high standardized test score can go a long way in that area.

As it pertains to the average SAT score that students who are accepted to UChicago earn, it is incredibly high.

In fact, the University of Chicago SAT scores average for students that get accepted is a phenomenal 1520 out of the perfect score of 1600. That average is amongst the highest in the country and should be a clear indicator of just how hard it is to get into the school.

How to improve your SAT score

Now that we have covered a few ways in which you can improve your GPA in high school, let’s break down a few quick ways that students can work to improve their SAT scores.

Take as many practice exams as possible

One of the best ways for high school students to improve their SAT scores is to take as many practice exams as possible. Of course, we do not mean to take ten practice exams in the final week leading up to the actual test. Instead, students should spend many months preparing for the exam, and taking a large number of practice exams over time.

The two most important things to remember when taking practice exams is to score your own tests and make note of areas that you need to improve on and to time yourself with the same amount of time that you will be allotted during the actual exam.

Work with a tutor

Here at AdmissionSight, we proudly offer the students that we work with the opportunity to take part in our one-on-one tutoring program for both the SAT and ACT. We believe that one on one tutoring is an incredibly effective way for students to improve their performance when taking standardized tests.Woman studying with a tutor.

Tutors will not only give students effective studying techniques and teach students how to approach specific kinds of questions, but they will also be able to closely monitor a student’s progress to make sure that they are identifying the sections and questions that they most need to work on.

Learn important rules and equations

Another really important way that students can work to dramatically improve their performance when taking the SAT is to commit the time necessary to memorizing important grammar rules and mathematical equations.

Often, the reason many students struggle with the SAT is because they simply run out of time necessary to complete every question. For that reason, efficiently approaching each question is very important.

Making sure that you know exactly what kinds of equations to use during the math section as well as how to easily identify grammar issues during the English section can help you shave many minutes off your test time so that you can make sure that you have the extra time to go over your answers.

Learn how to utilize process of elimination

Finally, students who are interested in improving their SAT scores should spend a fair amount of time mastering the process of elimination. Sometimes, knowing which answers are wrong is just as good as knowing which answer is right.

By being able to eliminate incorrect multiple-choice answers, students can save loads of time that they would otherwise be using trying to get the right answer. This may seem like something of a dishonest trick, but it is in fact a tried and true strategy that many students have used throughout the history of the standardized test process.
