Each entering freshman is assigned to one of the fourteen residential colleges at Yale. For the entire four years, students are still connected to their residential college (and beyond). Every residential college at Yale tries to reflect the variety of the student body as a whole. Each college serves as a miniature representation of the overall student body in this regard.

Most first-year students live on Old Campus in dorms assigned to specific colleges. Then starting in their sophomore year, students reside in their colleges. Graduate students enjoy a wide range of inexpensive, convenient, and comfortable housing alternatives in the wider New Haven area. They have the choice of living on campus, in Yale-owned off-campus apartments, or in off-campus houses and apartment complexes in several communities around the university. While most graduate students reside on or near the New Haven campus, others choose to commute and reside in surrounding towns.

In addition, the Yale community has access to a range of high-quality, market-rate university-owned housing options through Yale University Properties. Apartments with one to four bedrooms, townhouses, and single-family homes are all included in this. The Yale Campus is bordered by the units.

For the benefit of the Yale community, Off-Campus Living is a website where landlords and student subletters list privately owned apartments, homes, and house shares. Be sure to research these facilities; see the advice on off-campus housing below. Yale does not own, inspect, or recommend these establishments. You can also check other students’ landlord reviews and post your own for off-campus rentals.

How do dorms work at Yale? All students residing in Yale College housing, as well as any guests, whether they are Yale students or not, are subject to the campus housing laws. The residential colleges, the Old Campus, and any additional annex spaces are subject to the following rules.

For the duration of their rustication, first-year and sophomore students are required to live off campus. First-year students and sophomores, for whom residence is compulsory, are guaranteed on-campus housing. All those who request housing typically have access to it, however, availability is not assured.
  • Off-Campus Housing – Juniors and seniors are often allowed to live off campus, although in exceptional cases, the residential college head or dean may insist that a student stays on campus. The University deems that students’ living arrangements have been disclosed to their guardians or parents. Any student who lives off-campus has the option of choosing a resident food plan, and they are also urged to utilize all the college’s other amenities.

Each resident student must sign up for a meal plan. At the discretion of the residential college deans or heads, vacant beds in suites may be filled without previous notification to the students. While students will often stay in the room to which they have been assigned, the dean of student affairs may decide to relocate them.
  • Mixed-Gender Housing – All students have the option of living in mixed-gender accommodation at Yale under the following restrictions:
  • No student will be compelled to live in a mixed-gender suite.
  • Availability can be restricted depending on how many students choose this choice.
  • In the housing selection process, mixed-gender housing groups will not receive any advantages or disadvantages. Students may need to separate into several groups, some of which may or may not be mixed-gender if they are unable to choose a suite that can accommodate them.
  • During the matriculation process, incoming students have the option to express an interest in housing that is mixed-gender.
  • Room Draw – A student who enters a residential college’s spring room draw and accepts the Yale dorm room because the draw has made a contract for that room. If the student later gives up the accommodation, they will often be responsible for the fees listed in Financial Services.
