AP Computer Science Principles Score Cutoffs for 2026
Thresholds are estimated from publicly-available 2025 distributions and historical College Board data. Exact cuts are not released, but they shift by only a few points year-over-year.
| AP Score | Composite Range | College Board Qualification | What it earns at most colleges |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 90 – 100 | Extremely Well Qualified | Credit + placement at most universities; typically 3 credits for an intro-computing course. |
| 4 | 81 – 89 | Well Qualified | Intro-computing credit at most universities. Selective CS programs may still prefer AP CSA. |
| 3 | 62 – 80 | Qualified | Credit varies. Large public universities often grant intro credit; many Ivy+ schools do not. |
| 2 | 45 – 61 | Possibly Qualified | No credit at most institutions. Score won't strengthen an application. |
| 1 | 0 – 44 | No Recommendation | No credit. Students typically choose not to self-report. |

How AP CSP is scored, component by component
AP Computer Science Principles is unusual: most of your score comes from one end-of-course multiple-choice exam, but 30% is earned through a project you build during the year — the Create Performance Task.
Multiple Choice
The end-of-course exam. A mix of standard single-select questions, a reading-passage set on a computing innovation, and multiple-select items that require two correct answers.
- No guessing penalty — answer every question, even after eliminating down to two choices.
- 8 multiple-select items require both answers to be correct — practice them deliberately.
- Pacing target: ~100 seconds per question; bank time on recall items for the reading set.
- Common stumbling blocks: abstraction, algorithm tracing, Boolean logic, and data representation.
Create Performance Task
You build an original program over ~9 hours of class time, then answer written-response prompts. It's scored on six 1-point rows covering purpose, abstraction, and algorithms.
- Data & Procedural Abstraction rows are the most commonly missed — plan for them early.
- Your procedure must take a parameter and use sequencing, selection, and iteration to earn the algorithm point.
- Testing row requires two distinct calls with different inputs and their resulting outputs.
- Reference your code precisely in written responses — vague descriptions lose easy points.
AP CSP Score Distributions, 2021 – 2025
Pass rates have held steady around 63–64%. In 2025, about 64% of test-takers earned a 3 or higher, while only 10.9% earned a 5 — one of the lower 5-rates among AP STEM exams.

How to lift your AP CSP score by 1–2 bands
Because 70% of your score is one multiple-choice exam and 30% is a project you control, AP CSP is one of the most "improvable" AP exams. These are the moves that consistently work.
Multiple Choice
+8 to +14 pts- Drill abstraction and algorithm-tracing items — they're the densest concept clusters on the exam.
- Practice the 8 multiple-select questions separately; both answers must be right to score.
- Memorize how binary, data compression, and the internet (TCP/IP, fault tolerance) are tested.
- Take two full timed multiple-choice practices in the final month to lock in pacing.
Create Performance Task
+1 to +3 rows- Design your program around a list AND a parameterized procedure from day one.
- Make the procedure contain sequencing, selection, and iteration — that single row is often missed.
- Document two test calls with different inputs and the outputs they produce.
- Quote exact line numbers / code segments in written responses — graders reward precision.
Exam Strategy
+3 to +6 pts- Submit the Create Task early — a finished, rubric-checked project removes May stress.
- Never leave a multiple-choice question blank; there's no penalty for guessing.
- Use the College Board's exam reference sheet (pseudocode) until its syntax is second nature.
- Review released exam questions — CSP recycles concept patterns heavily year to year.
A 5 in AP CSP won't get you into Stanford CS.
But the path to it usually does.
Calculators tell you where you stand today. They don't tell you whether your AP performance actually moves the needle on a Top-20 application. We do.
AdmissionSight has spent 10 years mapping the exact academic patterns that correlate with Ivy+ admissions. For computer-science applicants, AP CSP is the entry point — but admitted students pair it with AP CSA, a real project portfolio, and competition results. In over 89% of our admitted CS-track transcripts, the AP score isn't the story — the trajectory is. We help you build both.

AP CSP — Frequently Asked Questions
Answers compiled from 1,200+ student-and-parent intake conversations.
How accurate is this AP CSP score calculator?+
Our calculator is built from the publicly-available 2025 College Board score distribution and historical scaling patterns from 2021–2024. For students whose practice scores fall in the middle of a band, accuracy is high — typically within ±1 score band.
For borderline composites, treat the result as directional. College Board does not publish exact yearly cutoffs, and they typically shift by a few composite points each May.
What composite score do I need for a 5 on AP CSP?+
Based on the 2025 release and trend data, you need approximately 90 out of 100 composite points for a 5. AP CSP has one of the higher 5-cutoffs among AP exams, which is part of why only ~11% of students reach it.
How is the AP CSP exam scored — the full breakdown+
The end-of-course Multiple Choice exam (70 questions) is worth 70% of your composite and scales roughly 1:1 to 70 points, with no guessing penalty. The Create Performance Task is scored on six 1-point rubric rows and scales to 30 points: (rows earned ÷ 6) × 30.
The two add to a composite of 0–100, which is mapped to a final AP score of 1–5 using cutoffs set after each May administration.
What's the difference between AP CSP and AP CSA?+
AP Computer Science A (CSA) is a rigorous Java programming course focused on object-oriented coding. AP Computer Science Principles (CSP) is broader and more conceptual — covering the internet, data, algorithms, cybersecurity, and the societal impact of computing — with less emphasis on writing code. CSP is generally more accessible for beginners, while CSA carries more weight for prospective CS majors.
Is there a penalty for guessing on AP CSP?+
No. Your multiple-choice score is based only on correct answers, so you should answer every question. On the 8 multiple-select items, remember that you must mark both correct choices to earn the point.
Do colleges accept AP CSP credit?+
Policies vary. Large public universities often grant 3 credits for an introductory computing course at a 3, 4, or 5. Selective private universities typically require a 4 or 5. Ivy League and Top-20 schools usually grant placement rather than credit. Note that AP CSP generally earns less credit than AP CSA, since it doesn't cover programming in depth. Always verify the most recent policy with each school.
When is the 2026 AP CSP exam?+
The 2026 AP Computer Science Principles end-of-course exam is scheduled for early-to-mid May 2026 (College Board releases the exact date in its annual calendar). The Create Performance Task is submitted digitally in late April. Scores are released in early-to-mid July.
