How to become a National Achievement Scholar?

How to become a National Achievement Scholar? To become a National Achievement Scholar, a student must first take the PSAT/NMSQT, which is a standardized test that is typically taken during the student’s sophomore or junior year of high school. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the National Achievement Scholarship Program, uses the scores from this test to identify academically talented Black American students.

The selection process begins with the identification of the highest-scoring participants in each state. These students are then notified that they have been recognized as “commended students” or “semifinalists.”

Commended Students receive a letter of commendation for their exceptional academic promise, but do not continue in the competition for National Achievement Scholar awards.

Semifinalists are the highest-scoring participants in each state and represent the top 1% of Black American high school seniors. They are then asked to submit a detailed scholarship application, including an essay and information about their extracurricular activities, awards, and leadership positions.

From the pool of Semifinalists, approximately 800 students are chosen as Finalists and are notified that they have been selected to compete for National Achievement Scholar awards. These awards are based on a student’s academic record, test scores, extracurricular activities, and an essay.

To become a scholar, a student must be a United States citizen or legal permanent resident, be black/African American and be a high school student planning to enroll in college no later than the fall of the year following the student’s high school graduation.

It’s worth noting that the National Merit Scholarship Corporation has specific deadlines and requirements for the application process, so it’s important to check the eligibility criteria and application process on the official website before applying.
