The University of Michigan (UMich) application deadline is November 1, 2026 for Early Decision (ED) and Early Action (EA), and February 1, 2027 for Regular Decision (RD). Financial aid runs on its own cutoffs, and transfer students follow a separate schedule. Missing any one of them can close a decision window or put your aid package at risk.

This guide lays out every UMich application deadline for the 2026-2027 cycle. Use it as a checklist while you plan your application.

When Is the University of Michigan Application Deadline?

The University of Michigan offers three plans for first-year applicants, and the two early plans close on the same day:

Application Plan Deadline
Early Decision November 1, 2026
Early Action November 1, 2026
Regular Decision February 1, 2027

These dates apply to first-year applicants only. Transfer students and financial aid filers follow separate schedules, which we cover later in this guide.

University of Michigan Early Decision deadline

The UMich ED deadline is November 1, 2026. The Common App opens August 1, which gives you three months to prepare. UMich releases ED decisions by December 24, and admitted students must pay the enrollment deposit by January 6, 2027.

ED is binding, so an offer commits you to enroll. If you miss a requirement or a deadline, UMich moves your application into the RD pool. Note that the integrated Business and Engineering dual degree accepts ED applicants, but traditional dual-degree and preferred admission programs only open through EA or RD.

University of Michigan Early Action deadline

The UMich EA deadline is also November 1, 2026. Decisions arrive by January 29, 2027, and you have until May 1 to commit.

Because EA is non-binding, you can weigh the UMich offer and aid package against other colleges before you answer. If you want UMich to consider your SAT or ACT score, self-report it by November 1, although it isn’t required.

University of Michigan Regular Decision deadline

The UMich RD deadline is February 1, 2027. UMich sends decisions by April 2, and the commitment date is May 1.

RD is non-binding. The later date gives you time to add fall grades, retake the SAT or ACT, or polish your essays. Postponed EA applicants can also report new scores and first-term senior grades before February 1.

Applicants to the School of Music, Theatre & Dance can only apply through RD, and they face a separate December 1 deadline.

Once you submit, your next question is when you will hear back. UMich releases ED decisions by December 24, EA decisions by January 29, and RD decisions by April 2. For the full breakdown and tips for the wait, read our guide on when UMich decisions come out.

University of Michigan Transfer Application Deadline

The University of Michigan transfer application deadline depends on the term you enter and the school you apply to:

Transfer Application Deadline
Fall (LSA and Engineering) and Summer (LSA) February 1, 2027
Winter (LSA and Engineering) October 1, 2026
Fall (School of Music, Theatre & Dance) December 1, 2026
Fall (College of Pharmacy) March 1, 2027

Admitted fall-term students must pay the enrollment deposit by May 1, 2027.

The UMich admissions office reviews transfer applications only for the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) and the College of Engineering. Other schools and colleges run their own transfer processes. If you want to enter a sophomore or junior admitting unit, apply to that unit directly.

University of Michigan Financial Aid Application Deadline

The University of Michigan financial aid deadline depends on the plan you apply under. UMich requires two forms (the FAFSA and the CSS Profile). Here are the deadlines:

Application Plan FAFSA / CSS Profile Deadline Suggested Filing Date
Early Decision November 15, 2026 N/A
Early Action and Regular Decision March 1, 2027 December 15, 2026
Transfer (Fall) March 1, 2027 December 15, 2026

Applicants who file by the suggested filing date and receive an admission offer get a preliminary aid package sooner. That gives you more time to compare offers before May 1. UMich may ask for additional documents after you file, and those documents are also due by March 1.

UMich uses these deadlines to decide whether it can consider you for aid programs. A late filing can cost you aid even if the admission decision goes your way.

Beat the University of Michigan’s Application Deadline with Expert Help

The University of Michigan packs a lot into the fall. You need to pick between ED and EA before November 1, finish your essays, line up a counselor report and a teacher evaluation, and file the FAFSA and CSS Profile soon after.

AdmissionSight’s Standard College Counseling program gives you an advisor for the whole cycle. Your advisor helps you build a school list, decide which UMich plan fits, draft and revise essays, and check each piece of your application before it goes out. You get a working calendar from the start, so the early dates don’t catch you unprepared.

Some students only need help with one piece. Our Ad Hoc Consulting option covers that with focused, one-off sessions. You could book a strategy call on ED versus EA, a final read of your essays before November 1, or a review of your aid forms before the March 1 cutoff.
