A sign of University Pennsylvania that students can look forward to when UPenn decisions come out.

UPenn’s Early Decision (ED) applicants are notified in December, while Regular Decision (RD) applicants hear back in late March, during Ivy Day. Waitlisted and transfer decisions are released later.

If you know when UPenn releases decisions, it becomes easier to plan your next steps. So, in this blog, we’ll give you the decision dates for the Class of 3031, including the possible outcomes you’ll receive and what to do.

When Does UPenn Release Decisions?

UPenn releases admissions decisions twice a year for first-year applicants::

For the Class of 2030, UPenn released ED decisions last December 18, 2025. Meanwhile, it released RD decisions last March 26, 2026. The exact dates shift yearly, but they consistently release decisions in mid-December and late March.

When do UPenn Early Decision decisions come out?

UPenn releases ED results in mid-December.

The deadline is November 1, and admitted students will have to withdraw their applications to other schools and accept UPenn’s offer. UPenn sends an email notifying you when your decision letter is ready and available to view online. Then, you’ll have to log in to the UPenn Applicant Portal to read the official decision letter.

The letter contains three possible outcomes:

  • An admit means you’ll need to withdraw your applications to other schools and confirm your intent to enroll at UPenn.
  • A defer means your application has been moved into the RD pool for a second review alongside RD applicants. You’ll receive a decision in March.
  • A deny means your application has been closed for the cycle.

When do UPenn Regular Decision results come out?

UPenn’s RD applicants are notified in late March on Ivy Day, together with other Ivy League schools.

UPenn’s RD deadline is January 5, and admitted students have until May 1 to make a decision. Same as ED, UPenn sends out emails once the decisions are ready, and applicants log in to the portal to view the actual decision letter.

RD applicants receive one of three possible outcomes:

  • An admit means UPenn wants you in its incoming class, but you’ll have until May 1 to respond.
  • A waitlist means you may still receive an offer if spots open up after May 1.
  • A deny means your application is closed for the cycle.

Knowing when UPenn releases decisions is certainly important since it helps you ready your next steps. However, you’ll need to hit their deadlines first. Our blog on UPenn’s application deadlines breaks down the important dates you need to know.

When Do UPenn Waitlist Decisions Come Out?

UPenn doesn’t explicitly mention when waitlist decisions come out. However, given how the waitlist works (waitlisted students are admitted depending on how many admitted students choose to not enroll), you can expect them to come on a rolling basis from May through the end of June.

Even if you accept your spot on the waitlist, it’s much safer to also commit elsewhere by May 1 while still remaining open to a possible UPenn offer later in the summer.

If you find yourself waitlisted in late March, follow the instructions in your applicant portal to accept your waitlist spot.

When Do UPenn Transfer Decisions Come Out?

UPenn transfer decisions come out in mid-May. For Fall Entry 2025, results were released on May 15, 2025. The deadline for transfer applicants is March 15, 2027.

UPenn only accepts transfer applications for the fall semester and doesn’t have a waitlist.

What to Do After Receiving Your UPenn Decision

The decision you receive from UPenn affects your next steps:

UPenn Decision What to Do Next
Accepted If accepted through ED, withdraw applications to other schools and confirm intent to enroll. If accepted through RD, compare packages with other schools and confirm intent to enroll by May 1.
Deferred Send a letter of continued interest, maintain strong grades, continue being active in your existing extracurriculars, and keep finalizing applications to other schools.
Waitlisted Accept your spot on the waitlist if you’re still interested but commit to another school by May 1. Also, send a letter of continued interest to UPenn’s admissions office.
Denied Compare and choose from the offers and financial aid packages from the schools where you were admitted.

If you’re accepted off of UPenn’s waitlist, you can still withdraw from the school where you sent a deposit. You’ll have to forfeit the non-refundable deposit, but since UPenn’s waitlist is unpredictable, it’s still safer to commit to another school by May 1.

If you’re denied, you can still reapply as a transfer student in the next admissions cycle.
