Cornell notifies Early Decision (ED) applicants in mid-December and Regular Decision (RD) applicants in late March. Transfer and waitlist applicants hear back later, on separate rolling timelines that run through the summer.

If you applied to Cornell this cycle and are waiting for the results, this guide covers every Cornell decision release date, what the possible outcomes are in each round, and your next steps.

When Does Cornell Release Decisions?

Cornell releases first-year admissions decisions in two rounds:

Application Route Decision Release Decision Types
Early Decision Mid-December 2026 Admit, Defer, Deny
Regular Decision Late March 2027 Admit, Waitlist, Deny

For the Class of 2030, Cornell posted ED results on December 18, 2025 at 7:00 PM ET and RD results on March 26, 2026 at 7:00 PM ET. The exact dates shift slightly from year to year, but both rounds have consistently landed in the same windows.

Cornell sends an email when your decision is ready, and you log in to the Applicant Portal to view the result.

When do Cornell Early Decision results come out?

Cornell’s ED results come out in mid-December. The ED application deadline is November 1, 2026.

Three outcomes are possible:

  • Because ED is binding, an admit locks you in. You must enroll at Cornell and immediately withdraw all other pending applications. Admitted students have until May 2, 2027 to submit their enrollment deposit.
  • A deferral moves your application into the RD pool, where it gets a second look alongside all regular-round applicants. You will receive a final decision in late March.
  • A denial is final. Denied ED applicants are not reconsidered in the regular round.

When do Cornell Regular Decision results come out?

Cornell’s RD results come out in late March, typically on Ivy Day. All eight Ivy League schools coordinate their releases for the same date, and Cornell has posted its results at 7:00 PM ET in recent years. The RD application deadline is January 2, 2027.

Here are the possible outcomes:

  • An admit means you have until May 2, 2027 to respond. There is no binding commitment, and you are free to weigh offers from every school that admitted you before choosing where to enroll.
  • A waitlist decision means you stay under consideration in case seats open after admitted students respond by the May 2 deposit deadline.
  • A denial closes your application for the cycle.

Before you can check for a decision, you need to get your application in on time. Our guide to Cornell application deadlines covers every date for ED, RD, transfer, and financial aid.

When Do Cornell Waitlist Decisions Come Out?

There is no set date for Cornell waitlist decisions. If you are placed on the waitlist, you must submit a Waitlist Reply Form by April 10 to stay in the running. Cornell will not reach out to waitlisted students until May 4 at the earliest, once the admissions office sees how many admitted students accepted their spots by the reply date. From there, offers go out on a rolling basis through the summer.

If an offer reaches you, expect a tight turnaround. You will have seven days to accept and submit a nonrefundable enrollment deposit.

When Do Cornell Transfer Decisions Come Out?

Cornell transfer decisions come out on a rolling basis from late April through June. The transfer application deadline is March 15, 2027, and the admissions office reviews all applications after that date before releasing results in waves.

Cornell only admits transfer students for fall enrollment and does not offer deferrals. If you are admitted, you are expected to enroll that same fall. There is no spring transfer option.

What to Do After Receiving Your Cornell Decision

What you do next depends on which outcome you receive and which round you applied in:

Cornell Decision What to Do Next
Accepted (ED) You are bound to enroll. Withdraw all other applications, submit your enrollment deposit by May 2, and begin reviewing your financial aid package.
Accepted (RD) Compare offers and financial aid packages from every school that admitted you. Submit your enrollment deposit to Cornell by May 2 if you choose to attend.
Deferred Send a letter of continued interest with meaningful updates, keep your senior-year grades strong, and continue working on applications to other schools.
Waitlisted Submit the Waitlist Reply Form by April 10 if you want to stay in consideration. Commit to another school by the May 1 reply date. You can upload a letter of continued interest through your Applicant Portal.
Denied Look at the schools that did admit you, compare their financial aid packages, and commit to the one that fits you best by the reply deadline.

If you are waitlisted and Cornell later offers you a spot, you can accept it and withdraw from the school where you already deposited. You will lose that deposit, and you cannot defer your Cornell enrollment to a later semester. Given how unpredictable the waitlist is, putting your full energy into the school you committed to in May is the practical move until you hear otherwise.

If you are denied and Cornell remains a goal, you can reapply as a transfer student after finishing at least one full year at another college.
