For Rising 9th Graders
The Lott Leadership Institute for Rising Ninth Graders is an exciting program created in collaboration between the University of Mississippi’s Lott Leadership Institute and the Division of Outreach.
This program is tailor-made for upcoming high school freshmen, and its primary goal is to help you build important thinking and leadership skills.
The Lott Leadership Institute At The University Of Mississippi aims to nurture and motivate young leaders like you who are honest, compassionate, and responsible, with a focus on making a positive impact on their community.
Students accepted into this program come from all corners of Mississippi. You get to experience life on the UMiss campus while earning high school credit and diving into topics like public policy and leadership.
Plus, you get to build strong friendships with their fellow program participants. Throughout your time in the program, you will get the chance to interact with college administrators, student leaders, and active community members. You will engage in discussions about current events and practice making decisions.
As a special part of the experience, students even embark on a trip to explore important places around the state. You also work together on a service project to reinforce the idea of being responsible leaders.
There are two sessions of the Lott Leadership for Rising Ninth Graders, with twenty students selected for each term. To be considered, you must be nominated by a principal, guidance counselor, or University recruiter, and each school can nominate up to five students.

Admission Requirements for Rising 9th Graders
To be an eligible rising 9th grader for the Lott Leadership Institute at The University of Mississippi, you should be doing well in your eighth-grade classes both academically and in terms of behavior.
It doesn’t matter if you go to a public, private, or parochial school, or even if you’re homeschooled – all are welcome! Your grades from the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades should add up to a GPA of at least 3.3.
You should also have test scores that show you’re performing at or above your current grade level. Lastly, make sure to get the green light from your principal – they need to give you permission to apply for this exciting opportunity!
Academics
You’ll be taking a course called “Problems in American Democracy.” It’s all about getting a better understanding of the issues and challenges facing the United States today.
You will focus on analyzing these issues and finding positive ways to tackle them. This course is part of what the Mississippi Department of Education recommends. If you successfully complete it, you’ll earn half of a high school credit from the University of Mississippi.
Accommodation, Costs, and Other Important Things to Consider
Housing and Activities
You will live in a university dorm with other students in our summer programs, and they have counselors who are there to help and are close to your age. After classes each day, you’ll have fun doing things like sports and exploring the library and computer center on campus.
Personnel
The people in charge are from the Pre-College Program Office, and your teachers are certified high school teachers. They have about ten counselors living and working with you, making sure everything runs smoothly. They’re really cool UMiss students.
Safety
Your parents and you will both need to agree to some rules the University will send you. The only serious consequence of breaking these rules is being asked to leave the program. They have administrators, teachers, and counselors keeping an eye on things, and where you stay is safe and secure.
Costs
When you get accepted, you’ll need to pay a $125 registration fee to save your spot in the program. Then there’s the program cost, which is $500 in addition to the registration fee. But here’s the cool part: you are encouraged to raise money instead of paying it yourself. It’s a chance to build your leadership skills!
Unfortunately, the University can’t offer any financial aid or scholarships for this program.
For Rising 12th Graders
The Summer Leadership Institute for Upcoming 12th Graders is a fantastic partnership between the University of Mississippi’s Lott Leadership Institute and the Summer College for High School Students by the Division of Outreach.
This program has some big goals: to help young people like you develop strong leadership skills and get ready for college!
Here’s how it works: they bring together student leaders from all over the Southeast, and you get to earn college credit at the University of Mississippi while diving into the world of leadership.
But that’s not all! You will also have the chance to meet college administrators, student leaders, and community leaders. You’ll dive into current events, have some serious debates, and even take part in activities where you get to make important decisions.
The highlight of the program is a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. You’ll see the federal government in action, hear from national leaders, and explore our nation’s capital. Who can pass that up?
The Lott Leadership Institute at The University of Mississippi’s big hope is that when you finish this program, you’ll go back to your high school supercharged with new skills and ideas, ready to make your school and community even better.
Admission Requirements for Rising 12th Graders
Here’s the deal on how they pick who gets to join this awesome program. There’s a committee made up of folks from the University, and they’re in charge of selecting a total of 40 students – 20 for each session.
They’re going to look at things like how much you care about public service, your leadership skills, how much you care about others and your grades. They’re also going to try and make sure the group has all kinds of interests and experiences. To have a shot at this, you need to meet a few requirements
- You have to be in the 11th grade and doing well in school.
- Your school can be public, private, or even homeschooling.
- You should have at least 14 high school credits by the end of this school year and a GPA of at least 3.0.
- Then, you need to fill out an application online. Once your nomination is submitted online, they’ll send you an email with all the details about how to apply for this program.
Here’s what you’ll need to apply
- Fill out an online application with some essay questions. (Don’t worry; they’ll send you the application when you’re nominated).
- Get your current high school transcript or high school report card.
- Ask a teacher or someone from your school’s staff (but not the person who nominated you) to write you a recommendation letter.
- Include all the ACT or SAT scores you’ve taken so far.
Academics
Let’s talk about the coursework you will be taking. First up is Political Science 101, Introduction to American Politics. This class digs into the fundamental principles of the U.S. government.
You’ll explore how political stuff works, like how elections happen and what different political institutions do.
Next, there’s Speech 102, Fundamentals of Public Speaking. In this one, you’ll learn the ins and outs of putting together and giving speeches in all sorts of public situations.
Lastly, you’ll dive into Liberal Arts 199, Leadership Perspectives. In this class, you’ll pick up skills in doing research and get the chance to connect with a local leader who shares your interests.

You’ll bunk up with other students from the Summer College for Upcoming 12th Graders in one of the university’s dorms. Grown-ups and some older student counselors will look out for you and help you out.
When you’re in Washington, you will still have university folks and student counselors watching over you. You’ll all travel together and stay in a safe place.
Costs of the Program
Once you’re accepted into the program, you must pay a $100 registration fee to ensure you’ve got a spot. But here’s the cool part: you can get a scholarship to help cover the costs of where you stay, meals, classes, and getting there.
You will need to chip in $1000 for the program fee (in addition to the registration fee), about $125 for books, and around $200 for weekend meals, snacks, and some spending money on souvenirs.
The Lott Leadership Institute is big on encouraging students to fundraise for this money instead of paying it all themselves. It’s a great way to develop your leadership skills. They believe that an individual’s financial situation shouldn’t stop their desire to apply or finish the program.
