How Does Princeton Notify Acceptance?

Receiving an acceptance letter from Princeton University is a dream come true for many students. The admissions process at Princeton is highly selective, and the university receives thousands of applications each year. So, how does Princeton notify acceptance?

Ivy League schools send out admission decision letters twice a year, in mid-December and late March.

A single-early action applicant at Princeton may be notified in December that he or she has been awarded or denied admission, or that a final decision has been deferred until the late March notification deadline. Meanwhile, regular decision applicants to Ivy League colleges will be notified of admission decisions and financial aid awards on a set date, usually in late March.

Admissions offices may choose to notify certain candidates in writing of the likelihood of admission (e.g., likely, possible, unlikely) no sooner than October 1 of the prospect’s senior year in high school as established by each institution.

Highly selective colleges and institutions send “likely letters,” often known as “love letters,” to their top applicants. This recruitment strategy is utilized to uncover elite academic and athletic candidates. These letters inform students that they will most likely be admitted to the institution before the official decision notifications are sent out in late March and early April.

If the applicant maintains the academic and personal record stated in the completed application, the school will deliver a formal admission offer on the appropriate notification date.

For example, the admissions office may send written probability notifications to recruited student-athlete applicants who have submitted all needed application papers between October 1 and March 15 of their senior year in high school.

An applicant who receives one or more such written messages and has decided to matriculate at one institution is encouraged (but not compelled) to inform all other schools as soon as possible, and to withdraw all other applications.
