Asian & Pacific Islander students form a significant portion, with 35% at the undergraduate level and 21% among graduate students.

Hispanic students comprise 21% of undergraduates and 13% of the graduate student body, while white students account for 26% of undergraduates and 27% of graduates. Additionally, there’s a small percentage of students, 4% of undergraduates and 5% of graduates, whose race or ethnicity is not known or disclosed.

As reported by the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at UCLA, as of 2019, the majority of faculty members are White, comprising 63.5% of the total. The next largest group is Asian/Asian American or Pacific Islander faculty, who make up 20.0%. Faculty who identify as Chicana(o)/Latina(o)/Hispanic account for 6.7%, while Black or African American professors represent 4.6%. A smaller proportion of faculty, 0.7%, are American Indian or Alaskan Native. Those reporting two or more races constitute 1.6%, and a further 2.9% of the faculty’s racial or ethnic identities are unspecified or unknown.

These figures reveal that, in terms of racial and ethnic diversity, there is an underrepresentation of certain groups within the faculty, particularly among those identifying as Chicana(o)/Latina(o)/Hispanic, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and those of two or more races.

Recognizing this, UCLA has initiated steps to enhance faculty diversity. For instance, the UCLA Faculty Diversity Hiring Initiative is a program designed to boost the representation of minority faculty members by allocating specific funds to assist in the recruitment of these underrepresented groups.

In 2019, faculty members from underrepresented minority backgrounds—encompassing Chicana(o)/Latina(o)/Hispanic, Black or African American, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and those of two or more races—made up 15.3% of UCLA’s faculty.

The majority of UCLA’s U.S. students, about 85.54%, are California residents, indicating a strong in-state presence. The top states contributing to UCLA’s out-of-state student population include Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Washington, with California leading significantly with 4,906 students.

While the university’s location diversity is considered above average, there has been some criticism regarding its concentration on in-state student enrollment. This is partly due to the University of California’s policy, which limits out-of-state enrollment to 18% of the student body. Moreover, there’s a notable underrepresentation of students from certain U.S. regions, such as the Deep South and the Midwest.
