Shell Eco-marathon: Technical Tips

I. Team Preparation

Before diving into designing or building your car for the event, it’s important to organize your team and assign specific roles. This competition demands a high level of commitment, so here’s how to get started:

Clearly define each team member’s responsibilities. You’ll need a Team Leader, a Safety Manager, a Logistics Coordinator, and a skilled Driver. Consider bringing on mentors who have experience in similar projects.

First, everyone on your team should be familiar with the competition rules. If there are any uncertainties, don’t hesitate to contact us for clarification. Next, create a detailed budget and a plan for fundraising. Remember to include costs like shipping in your budget, and reach out to your sponsors early.

Before Shipping Your Vehicle

Your car should be fully assembled and test-driven before shipping. Spend several hours driving it in a safe area to ensure it’s ready for the Shell Eco-marathon. Conduct your own Technical Inspection to ensure your vehicle meets all the requirements before it arrives at the event. Take this inspection very seriously, as any non-compliance means you won’t be allowed on the track. Aim to clear the Technical Inspection on the first day of the event.

Be sure to print out all the necessary technical documents to bring to the event, as digital copies are not acceptable. Also, since all competition rules and instructions are in English, ensure your team managers and drivers are proficient in English for effective communication.

II. Designing a Vehicle with Safety as a Priority

When creating an ultra-energy-efficient vehicle, it’s equally important to prioritize the safety of your driver. Here are some key safety considerations:

Your vehicle must have a solid floor that fully separates the driver’s area from the road.

The body of the vehicle should completely enclose the driver, meaning no open-top designs are allowed. Use sturdy, reliable materials for construction – avoid using fragile materials like thin film, cardboard, or fabric. The body should also cover all mechanical parts when viewed from above.

A bulkhead is necessary to separate the driver from the energy compartment, especially in case of a fire. This bulkhead should be made of fire-retardant materials like carbon fiber or sheet metal. If you use wood, you need to add extra protective materials like aluminum to the energy compartment.

Ensure the bulkhead extends to the top and sides of the vehicle, leaving no gaps between it and the body cover. Wires should run underneath the bulkhead, and any gaps should be filled with fire-retardant materials, like metal tape, to prevent wire chafing.

Additional Considerations for Urban Concept Vehicles

  • Wheel covers should be part of the bodywork.
  • The driver’s door must have a minimum size of 500 x 800mm, and the design should not obstruct this space to allow quick entry and exit.
  • Since 2019, it’s mandatory for Urban Concept vehicles to have two doors. Bubble-top openings are not permitted.

Preparing for Design Checks

Send technical drawings, photos, or animations of your vehicle beforehand for review. This will help identify any non-compliant aspects of your design before the competition.

III. Essentials of Roll Bars and Safety Belts in Vehicle Safety

At Shell Eco-marathon, ensuring the safety of every driver is a top priority, especially in case of accidents. Here’s what you need to know about roll bars and safety belts:

Roll Bars

Roll bars are crucial for protecting your driver in a rollover. They must be higher than the driver’s shoulders when they’re seated normally. There should be a minimum five-centimeter gap around the entire racing helmet.

The roll bar should withstand a 70kg static load. This will be tested from various directions during the Technical Inspection. You can use tubular steel or panel-type roll bars, and they should be an integral part of the chassis.

Safety Belts

A five-point or six-point belt system is required. The mounting points must be attached to the vehicle’s strongest part, following the manufacturer’s guidelines.

For Prototype vehicles, waist straps should be at a 90-degree angle to the floor. In Urban Concept vehicles, they should be angled between 45 and 60 degrees.

The belt should come together at the lower abdomen’s center. Crotch straps need to be mounted right below the base of the driver’s spine, either attaching directly to the locking mechanism or looping through the waist straps and fastening via the shoulder straps.

These should be mounted around 10 degrees below the shoulder level. Ensure that all safety belts are tightly secured, with no loose straps.

Additional Safety Practices

These safety features must be in place even during practice sessions, well before the actual Shell Eco-marathon event. Drivers should wear a one-piece race suit, protective gloves, and a helmet during practice. Conduct practice sessions in a safe, non-public area.

These precautions are not just for the competition but for every stage of testing and practicing. Safety is paramount in ensuring a secure and successful participation in the Shell Eco-marathon.

IV. Understanding Telemetry in the Shell Eco-marathon

Telemetry is a key feature at Shell Eco-marathon events, allowing the transmission of real-time data about each car’s location, speed, and energy usage. This information benefits both teams and spectators:

For Teams: Telemetry data helps them learn and improve their vehicle’s performance.

For Spectators: It enhances the excitement by showing live updates of the race.

How Telemetry Works

Sensors in the car collect data and send it to an onboard computer. The onboard computer then relays this information to a cloud-based server. The server processes this data and makes it visible to students and spectators on displays and social media platforms.

Monitoring Energy Consumption

  • The telemetry system uses different components based on your vehicle’s energy type:
  • A liquid flow meter measures the fuel flow between the tank and the engine.
  • A joulemeter, placed between the battery and the vehicle’s electrical system, measures electrical energy usage. In vehicles with an internal combustion engine, the starter motor should be positioned after the joulemeter.
  • A Hydrogen Flowmeter calculates the consumption of hydrogen in normal liters by the fuel cell.

On Board Computer (OBC)

The OBC is essential for all vehicles in the competition. Here are its features:

The OBC is powered by a dedicated battery provided by the event organizers. It includes an external element with GPS, Wi-Fi, and cellular antennae, and an internal part that connects sensors and the telemetry battery.

The external component should have an unobstructed view of the sky and not be covered by the car’s parts. The housing can have siding, but all OBC buttons and LEDs must remain easily accessible. The OBC should be mounted within 10 degrees of the horizontal.

Telemetry plays a crucial role in the Shell Eco-marathon, providing vital information for teams to optimize their vehicles and enhancing the overall experience for everyone involved.

V. Motor Controllers for Battery-Electric Vehicles in Shell Eco-marathon

In the Shell Eco-marathon, the use of store-bought motor controllers for Battery-Electric vehicles is prohibited. This rule is designed to encourage teams to gain a deeper understanding of their electric motor’s control requirements. Here’s what you need to know:

Teams are expected to learn about their electric motor’s control needs. Once these requirements are clear, they can then specify and integrate individual system components, such as a single-board control computer and the power driver stage.

If teams choose to design their own motor controllers or power stages and incorporate them into a printed circuit board (PCB), that’s encouraged. However, it’s important to etch the initials “SEM” onto the PCB to indicate that it’s custom-made for the Shell Eco-marathon.

Modifying a purchased controller to use in the competition is not allowed. The Technical Inspectors at the event are trained to identify such modifications.

The competition rules also forbid the use of motor controller evaluation kits, including any individual components or software from these kits. The aim is for teams to develop their motor controllers independently.

By mandating the development of custom motor controllers, the Shell Eco-marathon aims to enhance the learning experience of the participants and ensure a level playing field in the competition. This rule encourages innovation and technical skill development in the design and implementation of motor control systems.
