When it comes to applying to the top schools in the country, your application is vitally important. In order to give yourself the best chance of gaining admission, you need to make sure all aspects of your application are top-notch. In this post, we’re going to do a deep dive into how to write University of Pennsylvania supplemental essays and everything you need to keep in mind as you write. The University of Pennsylvania uses the common app, and this means that you will be asked to answer essay questions contained in the common app. But like many top schools, The University of Pennsylvania also requires that you complete several short essays as well. The University of Pennsylvania supplemental essays 2022-2023 allow applicants a certain amount of freedom when choosing how to write their supplemental essays, but we’re going to look at each essay prompt and discuss the best way to respond to each topic.

The University of Pennsylvania Supplemental Essay Prompts 2022-2023

So, let’s start by looking at each supplemental essay prompt, and then we will discuss how to approach each one individually.

The University of Pennsylvania requires all freshman applicants to respond to three essay prompts that will give them a chance to further discuss your academic curiosity and personal values. The University of Pennsylvania supplemental essays for 2022 are as follows:

  • Write a short thank-you note to someone you have not yet thanked and would like to acknowledge. (We encourage you to share this note with that person, if possible, and reflect on the experience!) (150-200 words)
  • How will you explore the community at Penn? Consider how Penn will help shape your perspective and identity, and how your identity and perspective will help shape Penn. (150-200 words)
  • Considering the specific undergraduate school you have selected, describe how you intend to explore your academic and intellectual interests at the University of Pennsylvania. (150-200 words)

For students applying to the coordinated dual-degree and specialized programs, please answer these questions in regard to your single-degree school choice; your interest in the coordinated dual-degree or specialized program may be addressed through the program-specific essay.

How to write the University of Pennsylvania supplemental essays?

When it comes to how to write University of Pennsylvania supplemental essays, there is no “correct” way to respond. Each prompt is designed to give you a chance to write about your own experiences and how these experiences have shaped you as a person. Let’s look at how to approach each essay prompt.

1) Write a short thank-you note to someone you have not yet thanked and would like to acknowledge. (We encourage you to share this note with that person, if possible, and reflect on the experience!) (150-200 words)

This prompt gives you the opportunity to acknowledge someone who has made an important impact on your life. The first thing to consider when responding to this prompt is: who do you choose? The prompt specifically states that this thank you note should be to someone whom you haven’t yet thanked for their role in your life. This could be a teacher, a coach, or someone who helped you through a difficult time.

When responding to all of the prompts, keep in mind that the U of Pennsylvania wants to hear about your experiences, but they also want to see your creativity. And again, there is no “right” way to answer any of these questions. The goal, instead, it to craft a thoughtful, creative response that reveals something new and interesting about you.

2) How will you explore the community at Penn? Consider how Penn will help shape your perspective and identity, and how your identity and perspective will help shape Penn. (150-200 words)

The second prompt asks you to think about how you will approach the community at UPenn. The University of Pennsylvania supplementary essays 2022-2023 are more about getting a better understanding of you as a person than as a student. This prompt gives you the opportunity to write about the ways in which you will involve yourself in your school community, but also consider how you will approach the greater community.

Because UPenn is in the middle of Philadelphia, you will likely not find the cloistered college experience of a rural liberal arts college, and this is one of the reasons why UPenn is such an exciting place to study.

When responding to this prompt, you will need to research the school to see where you fit into their community, but you should also research the city itself to see how you can take advantage of your surroundings. Ultimately, you will conclude this essay by discussing how you think these experiences will shape you as a person.

You can also use this prompt to talk about your leadership skills and actions you have taken in the community you come from. Philadelphia is a vibrant city with a diverse population and an important history. When responding to this prompt, ask yourself how you could be a productive member of this larger community, and how it can positively impact you as a person.

3) Considering the specific undergraduate school you have selected, describe how you intend to explore your academic and intellectual interests at the University of Pennsylvania. (150-200 words)

The third prompt asks you to consider your chosen major and how this will relate to your existing interests. While this prompt may sound academic, it is really asking you to focus on what the University of Pennsylvania has to offer, and how you can use these resources to evolve as a student.

Of course, you don’t simply want to write out a list of courses you plan to take. Again, this isn’t primarily about academics as much as it is about your intellectual curiosity and commitment to learning. For this prompt, you should be fairly specific about your plans, but keep in mind that nothing you write here is binding. The main goal is to be creative and thoughtful.
