In recognition of the Honorable Frank J. Guarini’s transformative investment in graduate education, Dartmouth University announced in May 2018 that it would be renaming its School of Graduate and Advanced Studies as the Frank J. Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.

More than 1,000 graduate students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School at Dartmouth. These young men and women will go out into the world and drive positive change, just as Congressman Guarini has done. The Guarini School was the first new school to be created at Dartmouth in more than a century.

In 1885, the first graduate degree was presented, and today, the School is responsible for all Ph.D. presentations as well as administrative oversight of 12 master’s programs and an increasing number of interdisciplinary programs. The first graduate degree was presented in 1885.

More than one thousand graduate students, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral scholars are supported by the Guarini School across its 35 different programs. This includes all graduate students at Dartmouth Graduate School with the exception of Tuck’s MBA students and Geisel’s medical students.

At the Dartmouth Graduate School’s Frank J. Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies, students can earn master’s and doctoral degrees in a wide variety of fields of study. These degrees can be earned in several interdisciplinary programs as well as doctoral programs that are connected to Dartmouth’s professional schools. There are also postdoctoral scholars affiliated with the Guarini School who have appointments at Dartmouth College, the professional schools, or Dartmouth-Hitchcock.

In addition, the Dartmouth Graduate School is comprised of the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business in addition to the Frank J. Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies. These three schools are the Professional Schools that make up the Dartmouth Graduate School.

How to get into Dartmouth Graduate School?  When you submit your application to Dartmouth Graduate School, you are placing your faith in the Admissions Committee‘s ability to examine it with diligence and deliberation. You, in turn, have the right to know how the team at Dartmouth Graduate School examines the documents you’ve submitted.

The Admissions Committee is made up of skilled staff members who are professionals in their fields. There are three rounds of review for each application by the Committee. If you submit your application well before the cutoff time for this application round, we may start going through your materials almost as soon as we get them in our hands. Although we may prioritize reviewing early submissions, the date of your application has no bearing on either your chances of admission or the date you will be notified of our decision regarding your admission.

The Dartmouth Graduate School will get in touch with you if any of the required materials for your application have been omitted. It is possible that some of the resources you are lacking, such as a transcript or résumé that did not upload correctly, will be added in time for the assessment of your application round.

Your application might need to be advanced to the following round if you submit late materials (such as letters of recommendation, for example). If we do not contact you regarding late or missing materials, you may safely assume that your application has been received in its whole and is ready to be evaluated.

All choices made by the Dartmouth Graduate School are communicated in an official capacity through the application portal. The Committee may also choose to personally contact those applicants who have been accepted in order to deliver the good news.

Dartmouth Graduate School Requirements

What are the needed Dartmouth Graduate School requirements for admission? Graduate students at Dartmouth Graduate School have access to facilities that are among the best in the world, exceptional professors, and an institution that places a high priority on individualized instruction. At Dartmouth Graduate School, graduate programs only accept the most highly qualified individuals whose academic histories, as well as their personal and professional experiences, have prepared them for success and greatness in graduate studies.

Every facet of your application corresponds to one or more of our admissions requirements. Your application form contains information for the background check. Your academic transcripts and test scores are evidence that you possess a high level of intelligence. Your CV provides evidence that you have achieved a lot in your life. Your essays provide evidence that you have awareness and that you encourage others. Both the letters of recommendation and the interview are structured to elicit evidence that addresses each of the four criteria.

Application Form

To be considered for admission, you will need to fill out and submit an application to the Dartmouth Graduate School.

Application Fee

Confirm your application by paying a non-refundable application fee, the amount of which is determined by the program to which you are applying. Applicants who meet the requirements can have the application fee waived if they make the request. Waivers of the application cost are sometimes made available to people who are struggling financially, and these exemptions are often determined on a case-by-case basis.

Academic Transcripts

You may upload a copy of your academic transcript from each college or university that you attended for either your undergraduate or graduate studies. You need to also provide a transcript from your previous institution if you transferred here from another school. It is not necessary to produce transcripts for postgraduate non-degree courses or from schools where you studied abroad if the course(s) you took abroad are specified on your transcripts from your undergraduate or graduate school.

Please submit all of the pages that are available for each transcript, including any pages that describe the grading scale used at your school. In the event that your transcripts are not written in English, you will need to upload both the original transcript as well as a certified translation.

Test Scores

Either the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) can be used to gain admission to Dartmouth Graduate School (Graduate Record Examinations). We do not have a strong preference for either of the two available tests. In your application, you will need to mention both your score and your percentile. Please provide your most recent valid scores and those taken within the past five years.

There is no exemption for the requirement that submitted applications include self-reported GMAT or GRE scores; these scores must be included in order for the application to be considered complete. Valid test scores are required to be submitted by all applicants, regardless of their level of education or professional experience.

Your self-reported test scores need to be current as of the day you submit your application. In the event that any of your test scores will become invalid before the month of August 2023, you are required to provide Dartmouth Graduate School with your official score report(s) before completing your application.

There is no minimum grade that must be achieved in order to submit an application or to be admitted. You are allowed to retake the examination as many times as necessary in order to achieve the desired level of performance. You are free to take the test as many times as you like, but we will only evaluate your highest score.

If an applicant’s scores are set to expire before August 2023, they are not required to submit official score reports until after they have been admitted to Dartmouth Graduate School and have made the decision to enroll there. Admitted students are required to have an official score report provided to Dartmouth Graduate School within 30 days of enrolling in the program after they have been accepted. The Dartmouth Graduate School will check the students’ previous academic work before admitting them.

English Language Proficiency

To demonstrate that you are proficient in the English language, you must submit your scores from one of the following exams if English is not your native language. Please be aware that we do not reject the online or at-home versions of these examinations.

• The English Exam on Duolingo (DET)
• Academic Testing of English Using the International English Language System (IELTS)
• Academic Version of the Pearson Test of English (PTE)
• The Internet-Based Test of English for Speakers of Other Languages (TOEFL)

Report all of the valid scores that you have received during the past two years. Please take note that your test scores must still be current as of the date you apply. In the event that your test scores will become invalid before the month of August 2023, you are required to provide Dartmouth Graduate School with your official score report(s) before completing your application.

The Dartmouth Graduate School requires that you send in your official score report (or reports) at least ten days before the test’s expiration date. We will also ask for your IELTS Academic Test Result Form (TRF) number if you are reporting an IELTS score to us. This number is located on the hard copy of the results paper that you have.

In order to finish your application to Dartmouth Graduate School, you need to email your confirmed DET scores through your Duolingo account. This is required only if you opt to submit a DET score. Until applicants actually enroll at Dartmouth Graduate School, they are not needed to submit official score reports for the IELTS, PTE, or TOEFL.

The only exception to this rule is for applicants whose scores will become invalid before August 2023. Admitted students are required to have an official score report provided to Dartmouth Graduate School within 30 days of enrolling in the program after they have been accepted. The Dartmouth Graduate School will check the students’ previous academic work before admitting them.

Resume

Send in a CV that details your work experience, academic achievements, and any other relevant experience you may have. We strongly suggest that you restrict the activities and experiences listed on your one-page resume to those that took place during and after you completed your undergraduate degree.

Letters of Reference

Request Letters of Reference (LORs) from individuals who are in a position to comment on your qualifications in relation to the admissions criteria of the Dartmouth Graduate School. If at all possible, you should ask your current direct supervisor to write one of your letters of recommendation (LOR). If you are unable to produce a letter of recommendation written by a direct supervisor, you will be requested to provide a brief reason for this. Your candidacy will not be strengthened by letters of recommendation written by instructors who were not responsible for supervising professional work, family members, or personal acquaintances.

Unless you are a reapplicant who applied during the most recent admissions cycle, you are required to provide two LORs with your application. Your reference ought to be the only person who writes your letter of recommendation.

Even if the person you are referencing asks you to draft, write, translate, or submit your own reference, you are in violation of the admissions criteria and the Academic Honor Principle of the Dartmouth Graduate School if you do any of these things. You are the one who is responsible for communicating this policy to your references.

References who are unable to write in English may choose to write in their native language instead, and the letter of recommendation can then be translated by a professional translation agency. Do not, for the purposes of your reference, translate the LOR into English.

It is your responsibility to inform your references of the application deadline and to make certain that your letters of recommendation are uploaded on time. Your application will not be reviewed by the Dartmouth Graduate School unless both LORs have been received before the application deadline. In that case, Dartmouth Graduate School will place your application in the stack for the subsequent round of admissions consideration.

Researching the programs that interest you will give you an idea of the goal GRE score that you should strive to get. Many educational institutions provide information about the average GRE score of their incoming class on their websites. Although receiving a score that is higher than the program’s average will not ensure that you will be accepted into the program of your choice, it certainly won’t hinder your chances either.
