Meet Dr. László Lipták, the esteemed Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Oakland University. His journey in academia began in 2003 when he joined the faculty at Oakland University. Dr. Lipták’s dedication and expertise led to his promotion to associate professor in 2007 and, later, to the esteemed position of professor in 2013.

Dr. Lipták’s passion for mathematics started early in life. Beginning with mathematical competitions in grade 3, he went on to represent Hungary in two International Mathematical Olympiads. In 1986, in Warsaw, Poland, he secured a silver medal, followed by a bronze medal in 1987 in Havana, Cuba.

His academic journey includes graduating with honors, earning a B.S. from the University of Szeged, Hungary, in 1993. Subsequently, he pursued his Ph.D. in mathematics at Yale University, successfully completing it in 1999. 

Dr. Lipták further honed his expertise through postdoctoral fellowships at the Fields Institute in Toronto, Canada (1999-2000), and the University of Waterloo, Canada (2000-2003).

Dr. Lipták’s research interests span various facets of mathematics, including combinatorial optimization, lifting-projecting methods, the stable set polytope, and interconnection networks. His contributions to the field are evident in his authorship and coauthorship of approximately 60 research papers.
