Duke University is a prestigious private research institution located in Durham, North Carolina. As one of the top-ranked universities in the United States, Duke offers a range of undergraduate programs across its arts and sciences, engineering, and nursing schools.

As with any institution of higher education, one of the most important considerations for prospective students and their families is the cost of attendance, including tuition.

How much is the tuition per year for undergraduates at Duke? For the academic year 2023-2024, Duke undergraduate tuition costs $63,450. This figure does not include other required fees and expenses, such as room and board, books and supplies, and personal expenses, which can vary depending on the individual student’s circumstances.

The total cost of attendance before financial aid amounts to approximately $89,000 to $90,000, inclusive of the estimated budget for books, supplies, personal expenses, and transportation for students living off campus or with their families or relatives.

Duke undergraduate tuition has been rising steadily over the years, as is the case at many universities in the United States. However, Duke is also committed to making its education accessible to students of all backgrounds through a generous financial aid program. In fact, about half of all undergraduate students at Duke receive some form of need-based financial aid.

How much does room and board cost at Duke?

Residential life is an integral part of the undergraduate experience at Duke University. The university’s residential model is designed to foster community and connection among students and support their academic and personal growth.

Duke students are required to live on campus for their first three years, and there are various residential options available, including traditional residence halls, apartment-style living, and residential communities focused on specific themes or interests.

How much does room and board cost at Duke? The housing cost for the current academic year is $9,884 for a standard double room, while the meal plan costs $9,182 for the whole year. First-year students are required to purchase a Dining Plan that includes 14 pre-paid, all-you-can-eat meals each week, as well as Food Points for a la carte meal purchases on campus.

All first-year students begin their Duke experience on East Campus, currently, the only residential home for first-year students, where they have several chances to develop new connections and friends purposefully, become leaders in their residential community, and receive the support of various university professionals as they begin their undergraduate careers.

With the high cost of Duke undergraduate tuition and room and board expenses, students might worry about attending the prestigious university. However, Duke is committed to making its education accessible to students of all backgrounds through a generous financial aid program and work-study opportunities.

Does Duke give full financial aid to international students?

As with any institution of higher education, one of the most important considerations for prospective international students and their families is the availability of financial aid. Does Duke give full financial aid to international students?

Duke University offers financial aid to international students who are admitted to the university. Every year, Duke University aims to enroll 20 to 25 international students whose full demonstrated need has been addressed by a need-based financial package supplied by the university.

International applicants who declare an interest in financial aid are evaluated in a separate admissions pool, and those admitted with “no financial aid interest” will not be eligible to apply for financial aid during any year of their undergraduate study.

International candidates seeking need-based financial aid must fill out and submit the College Board’s Profile using their family’s most current foreign tax forms.

Applicants must also present current foreign tax returns (translated into US dollars) and an English-language statement from their parents’ employers detailing their annual income. All relevant tax documents should be sent to the Financial Aid Office directly.

Furthermore, overseas students seeking need-based aid should also provide information about financial issues affecting their family’s capacity to fund their educational expenses.

Duke wants a diverse student body and is committed to ensuring that it helps students get the most out of their Duke experience.

To that purpose, Duke welcomes U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and a limited number of international students regardless of financial status or aid eligibility and meets 100 percent of each admitted student’s demonstrated need for eight academic semesters of undergraduate enrollment.

How do you get a full scholarship to Duke?

During the current academic year, 51% of Duke undergraduate students receive financial aid, which includes aid based on family resources, athletics, and endowed competitive scholarships. Students who obtain financial aid come from families with incomes of up to $200,000. Duke has contributed more than $1.5 billion in financial aid for undergraduate students since 2012.

Duke is one of just a few colleges and institutions that enroll US students regardless of their ability to pay and then cover their entire documented financial need if they qualify for aid.

In addition to the Duke undergraduate tuition, room, board, and other fees, Duke’s financial aid packages cover study abroad, summer programs, and other aspects of the student experience.

So, how do you get a full scholarship to Duke? First, students must submit the Free Application or Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online for U.S. citizens and permanent residents only.

Another requirement is the CSS Profile completion. The CSS Profile is an online application platform that universities and scholarship programs utilize to give institutional aid.

Some applicants may be requested by the College Board to submit additional forms like tax returns and/or additional evidence. If this is the case, the College Board will email you instructions on submitting any additional prerequisites via their online IDOC service.

It is important to note that full scholarships are highly competitive and are awarded to a select group of students each year. However, even if you are not awarded a full scholarship, there are other options available to help cover the cost of attending Duke.

The university offers a generous financial aid program based on need, as well as work-study opportunities and other funding sources.
