At the time of application, prospective students in the Samueli School of Engineering must have a GPA of at least 3.4 to be considered for admission.

Applicants are required to have reached junior standing (60 semester or 90 quarter units) and finished the preparation for the chosen subject prior to being accepted into the program.

Required Courses


It is necessary that you complete two classes that are transferable to English composition.


  • Calculus and analytic geometry, calculus with multiple variables, differential equations, and linear algebra
  • The fields of aerospace engineering and mechanical engineering call for a course in the mathematics of engineering rather than the differential equations prerequisite.


Courses in calculus-based include experimental work in the mechanics of solids, sound, fluids, heat, electricity and magnetism, electromagnetic waves, light, and relativity


  • Two semesters of introductory chemistry, including laboratory work
  • The study of general chemistry is only necessary for one class for those interested in electrical engineering.
  • Both bioengineering and chemical engineering require students to complete a full academic year of general chemistry with a laboratory component and two academic years of organic chemistry.
  • The following majors do not require students to take chemistry, including computer engineering, computer science, and computer science and engineering.

Computer Programming

  • One course in Java, C, C++, or Matlab.
  • C++ coursework is required for those interested in studying electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, or computer science and engineering. Matlab is strongly recommended for use in all of the other disciplines.


It is highly recommended that students majoring in bioengineering take one year of cellular, molecular, and genetic biology along with a lab for the degree.

Extra Instructional Programs

  • UCLA Engineering requires applicants to have completed at least one course in either the humanities or the social sciences; however, applicants are strongly encouraged to complete up to four classes in either of those fields in addition to one course in the Life Sciences elective.
  • It is not necessary to have completed the UC Reciprocity or IGETC in order to gain admission to these disciplines.
  • Depending on their chosen concentration, students can fulfill the requirements for their core program by completing engineering classes in statics, dynamics, the strength of materials, properties of materials, and circuit analysis.
